Sam and the Princess

by Elliot Brown

Once upon a time in a town filled with magical creatures, wizards, and witches, lived a king and queen. They had a lovely daughter named Emily. She had curly brown hair, and could always be heard singing on the castle grounds. One night the evil wizard of the town took Emily away to his castle to be his queen. As soon as the king and queen found out that Emily was gone, the king declared a proclamation to all the citizens of the village in his booming voice, "I hereby announce that any man of this town who finds Emily will be granted my permission to marry her."

Many men of the town set out to look for Emily but never returned. One day a young man named Sam decided to try and rescue the princess Emily. Although Sam was the youngest of six brothers, he was the most clever of them all. Sam went to a wise man who lived down the road. When Sam knocked at the door an old, odd-looking man with small spectacles appeared. Sam told the man what the king had said. The old man told Sam, "The evil wizard took Princess Emily to his castle." "How do you get there?" said Sam. The old man gave him these instructions:

"To get to the castle you need to turn left by the gnome's house, and keep going until you get to a rainbow with a cottage under it. Knock three times on the door, then a Leprechaun should appear and ask you a riddle. If you get it right, he will give you a magical horse. Then say, ‘Ipati-zam' and the horse will grow wings and fly to the castle where you will find the princess in the left tower." Sam carefully followed the instructions and found the beautiful princess. Later that day they set out for the town. They followed the directions backwards (from last to first) and finally got back home to the king and queen, where they got married, had three children and lived happily ever after.
