Invocation

Phillip Brown

I stand
at the shoreline
in the pale light
of morning
simple and soft-spoken

The sand glistens
dark and wet
its smooth grains
slipping between
my toes

I am silent
reverenced as
the waves draw near
and wash my feet

Cold waters caress
my ankles
and a breeze
laden with the smell
of living things
glides delicately
over my skin

a blessing from the sea

I linger
at the water’s edge
and stare out
to the horizon
where the sky
touches the earth and

I feel
a space within
resonate
with the voices
of the sea
the whispering
of waves

A drop of light
splashes silently
rippling inside
of me
and my soul
stirs and drifts
toward the surface

I am called
the sea speaks
my name and
I am unsure
how to answer

amen
I whisper

I stand
at the shoreline
in the pale light
of morning
