The fort was totally cool! The ranger gave us a great short lecture about all the events and then we were free to walk around and see everything.
I thought the flags were very cool and since it was so windy, of course they were flying great!
They had an explanation about all the flags -- probably too small for you to read.
This is looking down on the officers' quarters that was a major target for the enemy because at the time it had higher walls than the rest of the fort. The successful bombing and burning of these quarters was the beginning of the end and led to the surrender of the Union Army.
The cannons were so cool. I bought a small one for my July mantel to remember Fort Sumter by.
Having a Titanic moment on the ferry -- ready to head back.

Our last stop in South Carolina -- The Boone Hall Plantation. It is the oldest working plantation in the United States. It was here that over a million of the bricks used to build Fort Sumter were hand made by slaves. As a side note, a few scenes from the movie "The Notebook" were filmed here.

On the plantation are 9 small slave quarters. Orginally there were 21. Each one probably measures 10x20 and would house a whole family. I gained a new appreciation for the slaves and what their lives entailed on this trip.
On the airplane ready to head back to Utah.
It was a fun combo relaxing and sightseeing trip!
